How USA Universities Evaluate Your 3-year Indian Bachelor’s Degree
Do You Have a Three-Year Indian degree?

Most bachelor degree programs in the U.S.A are four-year programs. Therefore, many U.S.A universities may feel hesitant about accepting a bachelor’s degree with only three years of study. Traditionally, a three-year bachelor’s degree from India has been viewed in the U.S.A as comparable to the completion of three years of undergraduate study, and therefore students have generally not been eligible for admission to U.S.A graduate schools unless extra credits are taken. This may be frustrating for students and we’ll explain how you can go about properly evaluating your hard-earned degree below.

The Indian higher education system is based on the British model consisting of a three-tier degree structure (bachelor, master, and doctorate). Although similar to the U.S.A system, Indian degree programs leading to the award of Bachelor Degrees in arts, science, commerce, and social sciences are mostly three years in length. Students who complete the three-year program are awarded a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Commerce (BA, BBM, BSc, BCom).

Where Can You Get Your Three-Year Bachelor’s Degrees from India Evaluated?

World Education Services (WES) is a not-for-profit organization with nearly 40 years’ experience evaluating international credentials. WES recognizes selected three-year bachelor’s degrees from India as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, when the following conditions are met:

  • The degrees have been earned in Division

The awarding institutions have been accredited by India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of “A” or better.

This means that if you have earned a bachelor’s degree, such as B.Sc. or B.Com, with Division I from universities accredited by NAAC with a grade of “A” or better, then WES may evaluate your degree as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree.

Which U.S. Universities Accept Three-Year Indian Degrees?

U.S. universities set their own standards for admission and may change them at any time. We recommend that students contact the universities of their choice for specific information on admissions requirements. Below are a few U.S. universities that we’ve identified that would accept candidates who hold three-year bachelor’s degrees.

  • Carnegie Mellon University
  • Darden School of Business, University of Virginia
  • Northwestern University
  • Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth
  • University of North Carolina at Charlotte
  • Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
  • Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University
  • Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College

Megha Mirchandani, a former WES Student Ambassador, shared that “despite having a master’s degree from the UK, my 3-year degree was not considered an equivalent of the U.S. 4-year undergraduate degree. So, I had to get my degree evaluated from WES to match my credits to the U.S. system. This was a process, as I had earlier used a different evaluation agency which was not familiar with the Indian system, and spent an additional 4 weeks in getting my transcripts reevaluated by WES who were familiar with the Indian system.”

So if you are planning to study abroad in the U.S. for a graduate degree, our advice is to start the process early and find out if you need to get a credential evaluation. The number of U.S. universities accepting these degrees is growing so make sure to check with the admissions office before applying! Feel free to leave us comments below if you have any questions.
